FlexiWaggon offers new and unique solutions for intermodal freight transports on railways and roads

The fully automatic Railway Carriage

FlexiWaggon offers new and unique solutions for intermodal freight transports on railways and roads. It enables lorries, buses, cars and containers to be transported on the same wagon. Also, FlexiWaggon enables individual loading and unloading of wagons. When the train stops, the loading and unloading of FlexiWaggon can take place almost anywhere. The only requirement is for the rail to be surrounded by a firm base which can hold the weight of the vehicle to be loaded or unloaded. The driver operates the loading or unloading of his own truck. Loading and unloading is done horizontally, which means no consideration is necessary for overhead contact lines. To load or unload an entire train set takes only 7 minutes. The lorry can drive on and off the wagon, with no need for reversing.

FlexiWaggon moves at speeds of 120 kilometers per hour and we are looking for solutions to reach 160 kilometers per hour. The wagon is not dependent on outside electrical power supplies. Shaft generators on the FlexiWaggon, create energy which is stored in batteries located on the wagon. Electrical outlets are built into the wagon. FlexiWaggon can load up to 52 tonnes, which can be compared with similar solutions loading 38-44 tonnes.

The environmental benefits of FlexiWaggon

The climatic change is a topic of high priority for politicians all over the world and the means of control for reducing the emissions of carbon dioxide will be influencing the global economy; the emissions trading scheme is one example. Markets and companies that invest in green technology such as FlexiWaggon, are expected to be found in the lead of the future as well ass having strong arguments when marketing the company or brand.

Environmental issues within the transport sector is one of the greatest challenges on the global market. A reduction in the emissions of carbon dioxide within the sector would make quite a difference; a difference possible to measure from the very first freight load. The technological solution is now available. The environmental benefits of FlexiWaggon are many and important. The greatest benefits relate to reducing the emissions of carbon dioxide but there are many more. There is less wear on the roads and noice pollution as well as emissions of exhaust and tire particles are reduced. Also, the solution contributes to improving road safety. A radical reduction of emissions of carbon dioxide is high on the EU agenda and also for many great nations of the world. Since the transport sector causes a substantial portion of the emissions of carbon dioxide, a transit to a larger share of railway-based transports is essential.

Emissions of carbon dioxide A lorry emits 2.7 kg carbon dioxide per litre of diesel. This means that a lorry driving across Sweden, between Malmö and Luleå emits 1.9 tons of carbon dioxide. A train with FlexiWaggons will accommodate for 28 lorries on this same route (750 m train length). This would result in a saving in carbon dioxide of approximately 53 tons between these cities.

The potential of changing transports globally

The demand from the market in respect of railway transports is high all over the world but the situation may differ between the countries. In countries within the EU and in countries such as Canada, USA and Australia, the basic concept is to use the railway for long-distance transports and lorries driving short distances, which is regarded as the most optimal, both in terms of transportation economy and environmental concern. In other countries such as India, Russia and China, the need for railway transports is generally high since the road infrastructure is limited.

The most essential task for Jan Eriksson, the innovator and developer of FlexiWaggon, has been to find solutions that can eliminate the problems that have so far hindered the development of goods transport by railway; problems such as time-consuming loading and unloading procedures, and the dependency on terminals which have made railway freight of goods in most cases an expensive and unprofitable business.

The development of FlexiWaggon has made it possible to transport goods faster and more efficiently on railway. The unique feature of FlexiWaggon is the flexible system for transferring goods between road and railway – without any use of terminals. With the simple pressing of a button, the driver can load and unload the goods and the railway carriage can continue, running on schedule. In as little as 7 minutes, the goods can be transshipped without disrupting the traffic on parallel tracks.

A climate calculation on Flexiwaggon

In June 2016 WWF presented their climate calculation on the innovation FlexiwWaggon by Flexiwaggon AB. The climate calculation was commissioned by the Swedish Energy Agency and the summary of it can be shown here.

Supporting FlexiWaggon

FlexiWaggon enjoys the support of the Swedish Government, the Swedish Energy Agency, The Swedish transport administration, Swedish Rail Administration and transport companies such as the Swedish Association of Road Haulage Companies. The World Wildlife Fund,German research institutes and Dutch authorities support our work within Europe.

Quoting Mikael Fjällström at the Swedish Energy Agency

“The benefits for the national economy with FlexiWaggon are numerous. The emissions will be reduced by 75%, including carbon dioxide emissions” says Mikael Fjällström, the Swedish Energy Agency. The amount of traffic on the roads will diminish and since FlexiWaggon has no need for special loading and unloading facilities, the transport work will be more flexible.

FlexiWaggon AB © (publ) offers a win-win solution

FlexiWaggon AB © (publ) offers a win–win solution. Besides the obvious needs of society to use the railway to a higher extent for the transportation of goods, the business potentials for the railway operators and haulage companies are enormous.

Calculations show that The FlexiWaggon makes it possible for the haulage companies to increase their margins by reducing the consumption of fuel, service, maintenance and the cost of drivers. When opting for the railway as the means of transport, the haulage companies can lower the capital expenses and achieve major synergies including lower costs for stock-keeping.
