By taking freight transport from the highway to the railway, Flexiwaggon enables significant cost reductions across the value chain while greatly improving sustainability in the transport industry. It enables lorries, buses, cars and containers to be transported on the same wagon. Also, Flexiwaggon enables individual loading and unloading of wagons. When the train stops, the loading and unloading of Flexiwaggon can take place almost anywhere. The only requirement is for the rail to be surrounded by a firm base which can hold the weight of the vehicle to be loaded or unloaded. The driver operates the loading or unloading of his own truck. Loading and unloading is done horizontally, which means no consideration is necessary for overhead contact lines. To load or unload an entire train set takes only 7 minutes. The lorry can drive on and off the wagon, with no need for reversing.

Flexiwaggon moves at speeds of 120 kilometers per hour and we are looking for solutions to reach 160 kilometers per hour. The wagon is not dependent on outside electrical power supplies. Shaft generators on the Flexiwaggon generates energy which is then stored in batteries located on the wagon. Electrical outlets are built into the wagon. Flexiwaggon can load up to 52 tonnes, which can be compared with similar solutions loading 38-44 tonnes.

A lorry emits 2.7 kg carbon dioxide per litre of diesel. This means that a lorry driving across Sweden, between Malmö and Luleå emits 1.9 tons of carbon dioxide. A train with Flexiwaggons will accommodate for 28 lorries on this same route (750 m train length). This would result in a saving in carbon dioxide of approximately 53 tons between these cities.

The potential of changing transports globally

The demand from the market in respect of railway transports is high all over the world but the situation may differ between the countries. In countries within the EU and in countries such as Canada, USA and Australia, the basic concept is to use the railway for long-distance transports and lorries driving short distances, which is regarded as the most optimal, both in terms of transportation economy and environmental concern. In other countries such as India, Russia and China, the need for railway transports is generally high since the road infrastructure is limited.

The most essential task for Flexiwaggon, has been to find solutions that can eliminate the problems that have so far hindered the development of goods transport by railway; problems such as time-consuming loading and unloading procedures, and the dependency on terminals which have made railway freight of goods in most cases an expensive and unprofitable business.

The development of Flexiwaggon has made it possible to transport goods faster and more efficiently on railway. The unique feature of Flexiwaggon is the flexible system for transferring goods between road and railway – without any use of terminals. With the simple pressing of a button, the driver can load and unload the goods and the railway carriage can continue, running on schedule. In as little as 7 minutes, the goods can be transshipped without disrupting the traffic on parallel tracks.
